Telluride Via Ferrata

An iconic Telluride outing and a must-do for adventurous visitors.

The Telluride Via Ferrata is a thrilling blend of rock climbing and hiking — a route of iron rungs, fixed cables, and cliffside ledges that traverses the dramatic rock walls at the end of the box canyon. Secured to a steel cable, you’ll make your way across narrow ledges and sheer cliff faces, with the Telluride valley opening up beneath your feet and sweeping views of Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado’s tallest free-falling waterfall.

Originally carved by local climber Chuck Kroger in the 1970s, the route has become one of the region’s most unforgettable adventures. The climbing itself is not overly strenuous, but the exposure high on the cliff face makes this a mentally challenging experience — rewarding in the best possible way.

What to expect

  • A hybrid of hiking and cable-assisted climbing along the cliffs at the head of the valley
  • Panoramic views of the San Juan
  • Mountains, Bridal Veil Falls, and the Telluride valley
  • A route best suited to those comfortable with heights and exposure
  • A guide is strongly recommended, especially for first-timers

Guided outings

For safety and peace of mind, we recommend booking a guided experience. Telluride’s local mountain guides supply all technical equipment and lead small groups along the route, sharing insight into the area’s history and geology along the way — so you can focus on the adventure.
